It is an infection adjacent to the anus that leads to abscess formation. It is caused by bacteria that colonize the glands surrounding the anus. The patient presents with pain, high fever and difficulty with bowel movements. The treatment is surgical and consists of an incision that helps the doctor to drain all of the pus and debris out. Allowing the abscess to go untreated may result in complications such as rectal fistulas.
