Appendicitis is one of the most common emergency procedures. Until recently, it was performed with an open incision of about 5 cm long on the right flank. This procedure can also be performed laparoscopically through 3 very small holes.
Endoscopic approach is beneficial for the patient, due to less pain, decreased hospitalization, and fewer post-operative complications.
Advantages of laparoscopic appendectomy include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Better aesthetic result
  • Increased visibility into the whole abdominal cavity by the surgeon and not just of the appendix site
  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Faster discharge from the hospital
  • Reduced likelihood of wound contamination
