The inguinal hernia, (as it has already been mentioned in the chapter of the diseases), is a defect of the abdominal wall which, as times goes by, increases in dimensions resulting in abnormal exit of tissue or organs from the abdominal cavity.
In addition to the classic open-incision procedure, endoscopic surgery can also be performed leading to excellent results.
In this case the hernia defect is restored through 3 small incisions in the skin, through which a fiber optic camera and long surgical instruments enter the abdomen. The hernia gap is covered with mesh so as to strengthen the abdominal wall and to avoid the possibility of recurrence.
The entire procedure lasts less than an hour.
The patient is fed and rises from the bed the same day.
The next morning he/she gets discharged.
Advantages of Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair include
- Smaller incisions
- Less postoperative pain
- Better aesthetic result
- Faster recovery
- quicker return to normal activities
- Simultaneous correction on both sides if there is inguinal hernia side on the opposite without the need of additional incisions.
- Increased safety due to magnified view of the nerves and vessels of the testicle thus avoiding injuries
